Stan

Having my sister go off half-cocked was something I was used to. Having her missing for two weeks while there was a serial killer on the loose was not something I was used to. These two weeks have been absolute Hell. I can’t even put into words how much stress this has put me under.

Stacey was the only family I had. Sure, I had some drinking buddies at the station, but none of them were family. When our parents died, I thought my life was over when I started raising my baby sister. Being only in my twenties, I was ready sow some oats and make some bad choices.

Instead, I was helping with homework, getting a steady job, and making sure Stacey had a chance at a good life. One like she would’ve had if our parents hadn’t died in an accident. There was no hesitation in me about keeping me with her.

We were family and I would not have us separated, by law or circumstance. But from day one, Stacey has been a handful, always getting in trouble in school and running around Sunny Shores with the not so great crowd of kids there. But I couldn’t talk her out of it. She had a stubborn steak at least a mile long. When she decided on something, that was it.

When she turned 18, she took off and got herself into a pinch. Since I’m a deputy in our town, I had to send three guys I really trust to get her back home. From that day, we never talked about what happen on her trip, but Stacey settled down a bit and life went on.

I loved that little hellion with all my heart. She made me laugh and always made sure we were together for holidays and special occasions. There is no way I would have turned out like I have after the loss of our parents, if she hadn’t been there.

So, seeing her strapped to a table with a guy standing over her with a big ass knife, was almost enough to give me a damn heart attack. All of this from a simple misunderstanding. Hopefully, that guy didn’t kill her so I would have a chance to hug her and kick her ass later.

As the agents start to swarm in, the guy with the knife runs off into the woods, making me able to take a breath. I had been holding my breath since we arrived here.

Stacey doesn’t even notice when I approach her, as she stares at the three musketeers, with tears in her eyes and the saddest look on her face I have ever seen.

When the truth finally does come out, hopefully, I never have to see that look on her face ever again. To try and catch her attention as I approach so she won’t be startled, I shout, “Stacey May Baymont.” Just like I have her entire life.

Cutting the restraints away, I scoop her up in a big hug, so relieved she is okay.
