Scene 2
Since I canât talk to Jules or Aislinn, and Momâs too busy studying, I have to make this decision on my own. After hanging up the phone, I flop down on my bed and hang my head over the edge. I can see out of the corner of my eye all the playbills around my room, but I need to focus. Thereâs only a short time that this works before the rushing in my ears makes me sit back up. I need to think fast.
Irene Brownâs words repeat in my head. I try to ignore the face she made at the end, the one I still canât understand, and just remember what she told me. That I have knowledge and enthusiasm. That my strength could be in directing. That she wants me to help her put together this yearâs camp showcase. That she doesnât usually do this.
This wasnât what I expected, but maybe itâs a way that I can show her that I really should be the lead. If Irene Brown wants me to be the assistant director, then I will show her that I am the best assistant director. And I know if I learn Janetâs lines at the same time . . . I can be Janet if Aislinn canât. Which happens sometimes in theater. Itâs called an understudy. Itâs not like I would be taking her part!
But I know I donât really want to be the understudy. The twinge in my heart that wishes I had been given the chance to be Janet hasnât gone away. Maybe being assistant director can be a way to show Irene Brown what I can do. It would be better than just some part in the background ensemble. But can I be just as good at assistant directing as I know I would be as Janet?
