CHAPTER 13
London Bridge is Burning Down
“Good morning, Max,” Jenny said as I walked into the offices seeing everyone busy at work. “We need to chat about your lab results when you get back. You’re not dying or anything, I just need to run a few more checks.”
“Good to see you too, doc,” I said noticing Frank sitting at one of the empty desks in the middle of the room busy at work, beating the computer keyboard as if it offended him somehow. “No problem, as long as I get back in one piece. Full house this morning, I see.”
Jenny nodded and ushered me back to the conference room. Who would have thought they actually used it by all the time spent in the dining room. I walked back hearing Ed and Phil’s voices. Passing by, I gave Frank a nod. “Morning, Frank,” I said apparently in too happy of a tone for Frank to handle.
“What’s got you so happy, pretty boy?” Frank said without moving from his work, still typing at a furious pace. He was reading, typing, and talking all at the same time with no signs of moving. Vampires…what can I say, creepy.
“Everyone was in here early this morning minus you. The boys had a call in the conference room this morning. Something came in overnight. Your boy Phil looked rough. Good thing he had some clearing potion in his drawer,” he continued, talking to me as if I was nothing more than an afterthought.
I walked past the crucible room with all the monitors and the ever present box. Ed and Phil were sitting in the conference room. The room could fit about ten people at the round table with one of those fancy call systems in the middle, and dry erase boards on the walls. The scent of freshly brewed coffee hung in the air like a dinner bell calling everyone home.
“Ah, Max, busy morning,” Ed said as he looked over Phil’s shoulder at a tablet.
Phil looked up with a sluggish gaze in his eyes that you could tell was being driven by more than coffee. “Morning, bruther. Sorry about the late text, had a little bit of a reunion with some old friends talking about Old Penny,” he said in a low tone.
“No problem,” I snapped back, already having had two cups of coffee. “To be honest, I’m a little jealous. With everything else going on, the only chance I’ve had to cut loose was on my birthday. I wish I was there,” I said reassuring Phil we would catch up later.
Ed looked over at me, all business. “Max, here’s the deal, we actually received a lot of information from Phil’s fieldtrip yesterday. I think we have some good information, and again links to the genesis have appeared. I reached out to all my trusted contacts. I know we have some information already, however it’s time to get a few members of the council involved. We all need to be careful, because we don’t really know who is at play.
