Chapter Seven

Slava rested in the cave until the shadows of the coming evening began to crowd out the light of the day. The air was changing now, and if her were fanciful man, he could almost imagine that something again watched him. Something not of this human world. Though he could not imagine what it could be.

In Russian, his parents and grandparents believed in what was called The Unclean Force. Нечистая сила was both the devil and all demons and potentially harmful in Russia. Although the beings of the unclean force resided primarily in the spirit realm -тот свет- they were able to manifest themselves in this world in many forms. The most well known among the unclean force were sorcerers, witches, the undead, and the "unclean dead", including suicides, those who died of drunkenness, victims of accidents and violent deaths, unbaptized infants, and vampires. Likewise, strangers and people of other religions were viewed as possessing the unclean force.

He’d heard the tales the entire time he grew up in Russia. Stupid beliefs the people in his village had. Salava rolled his eyes. Among these spirits they spoke of, the domovoi was considered dangerous. If angered, the domovoi would act as a poltergeist. Other spirits, like the rusalka, were more malevolent. She was said to lure men to their watery deaths. Among the places where the unclean force was strongest against the Russian peasant were the crossroads, the threshold and... Caves where the dead spirits might loom.

Slava paused and looked around. Well now, that was where he sat, wasn’t it? But he didn’t believe in that crap. Once you were dead, you were dead. But then again, it felt like something he’d been told about before.

Spoiling.

He remembered this part of those superstitious stories though just now, for some reason. Related to the unclean force was the superstitious belief in "spoiling" порча. One aligned with the unclean force could spoil another through the use of the evil eye or by means of a magical ritual. The spoiled person would be inflicted with such maladies and misfortunes. Such as sickness, mental illness, deformity, loss of livelihood, and death. One type of spoiling was a form of hysteria called klikushestvo кликушество. It caused the bewitched person to shriek, curse, and fall to the floor. This particular belief only interested Slava because it was so wild. To think that spirits could take over a person and do any damage. Make them go insane and shit.

Again, to him though, it was all Bolshevik.

He got to his feet and for a moment, he swayed and he felt dizzy. He grabbed the wall but he stumbled as his hand hit a slippery spot. Stepping out of the cave, he looked down at his hand in the dim light of the early evening and found his hand was stained with a reddish substance.

He wiped the substance off on his pants and began looking around the area. The air outside seemed suppressed and heavy and it was hard to breathe.
