Chapter Five

It took Tomeo a half hour after he’d returned home to fully realize why Shin had involved him in delivering the long-lost family members to the Yamaguchi household.

He’d wanted to make Tomeo look good in his parents’ eyes.

After oceans of tears and a lot of impassioned embraces for her brother and his family, Tomeo’s mother turned to him, hugging him hard. She hadn’t held him like that since he was about twelve.

“You wonderful boy!” she kept shouting. “You wonderful, beautiful boy!”

He caught a glimpse of Shin’s golden smile and couldn’t believe how kind the man was to him…to all of them.

Tomeo’s father began to pour sake for the men and seemed shocked when his wife rebuked him.

“Champagne,” she said. “This is a celebration!” She never challenged her husband’s authority in front of others. Tomeo silently applauded her and helped her in the kitchen. They had one bottle at the bottom of the fridge, which had been kept for this very occasion.

“Are you going to a costume party?” Auntie Jasmine asked his mother. Tomeo had to force himself not to laugh.

His mother pulled a face. “No. He likes me to dress this way.”

Auntie Jasmine quirked a brow. “My dear…”

Tomeo popped the cork in the living room and poured champagne for everyone. Even Asuka and Akifumi were allowed small sips. They all toasted each other.

Uncle Nori told them briefly that his family now lived in Minneapolis. He and several other former internees had been offered tentative positions in the MIS. When Tomeo and his parents looked at each other in confusion, he explained, “It’s the Military Intelligence Service.”

He beamed at them all. “I’ve gone from being the enemy to being one of the many Japanese men taking part in a special course at the University of Minnesota.” His face clouded. “I’m not sure what the future will hold, but if there is one thing I’ve learned…it’s that none of us really has a clue.”

Uncle Nori was mysterious about the actual details of his course.

“I start in September.” He shrugged. “I took a few early classes, but I can’t say yet if it is something I’ll love or not.”

Still, Tomeo was impressed.

His uncle said, “You must come and visit us, Tomeo. You and your future bride. I hear that Shin has his sights set on finding you one.” He gave Shin a sidelong glance. “Knowing the way you work, it probably won’t take very long.”

Tomeo felt the smile slipping from his face. He hoped Uncle Nori had no inclinations toward intuitive knowledge…

“Are you hungry?” he asked, to deflect the scrutiny he suddenly felt.

Akifumi nodded vigorously. “Very hungry.”

Tomeo’s parents had prepared a lot of food for the picnic the following day but his mother lamented they didn’t have proper food for a banquet.

“We’ll all going to dinner. How about Waikiki Lau Yee Chai?” his father asked.

Tomeo was stunned. His father never wanted to spring for a meal. Boy, he must really be happy to see Uncle Nori.

They drove in three cars to the restaurant, which was in a very festive mood.
