Chapter One

"Scootch, Frannie!" Mel tossed the sweet feed from the truck bed into the barn, her cattle dog barking and bouncing out of the way. Lord, ever since Len had disappeared in the late spring, Fran'd been clingy as all get out, just damn near driving her crazy.

Still, Len'd been Fran's littermate and every so often Mel hoped that sweet boy would show back up.

She grabbed another bag and tossed, humming as the wind started blowing, picking up the bottom of her jack shirt and lifting it enough that the sweat cooler. It was going to change to the north—probably bring rain with it too.

Damn good thing she'd put in some good hay. Come hail or high water, she was going to bunker down this winter, only go to town for necessities.

No matter what.

Frannie's barking took on a fever pitch, that silly mutt going crazy.

She tilted her head, hopped down from the bed, boots raising a cloud of dust. "What is it, Frannie? Snake?"

Her rifle was sitting on the back seat, waiting for her, and she grabbed it.

She arched an eyebrow, drew back the hammer. "What do you want? This ain't PackLand."

Not even close.

This was her land.

The damned fool just tilted his head, panting a little before sliding down to lie in the dirt, just like some stray dog that had decided to call her place home.

Frannie growled, standing at her leg, all bristled up and all, and Mel caught the stock under her arm, reached down to comfort her. "I ain't in the mood for bullshit. Move on."

Strangers weren't welcome here.

The wolf stood again, trotting up toward the house. Her house. Looking back over its shoulder like, are you coming?

"Jesus Christ." She put the tailgate up on the truck and shooed Frannie off toward the barn. The pup would be safe there with the horses. Then she headed to the house, stomping the mud off her boots. Man, she hated getting blood on her front porch.

The wolf went right to her front door, hopping up on the porch and waiting. Ears and tail up.

"Look. I don't know what you want, but I'm NOT friendly, okay? I'm not hunting a mate and I don't need a fuckbuddy or some shiftless cur poaching on my hunting grounds."

A sharp bark was her answer, one big old paw scratching at her door. The message was clear. Let me in.

"Damn it." She twisted her lips, pushed a strand of hair that had come loose from her braid. "I swear by the moon, if you so much as twitch hard, I'll turn your hairy ass into a rug."

Then she opened the door.

As soon as the damned beast got inside he started to change, the furry body lengthening and stretching, going all human and bare. Until she had a big old man sitting on her front rug.
