Chapter Fourteen
Brian
I stared out into the snow, clearing the steam off the window every so often as I filled the bucket with hot water. The act was second nature, my body going through the motions of adding bleach to the scalding water. I lifted the bucket from the sink without a second thought and carried it down the stairs.
I had left the cellar door propped open at the foot of the stairs, the mop and squeegee already resting against the open cage. The plastic booties over my shoes squished against the concrete floor, keeping the soles of my shoes clean of the bloody mess that covered the cage.
I looked at the mess left behind of my shift. The teeth, both human and beast scattered around in the blood and goop of skin and hair. It was a horrifying sight. One that spoke of the pain that came with the shift. The broken bones and their immediate healing as they warped their shape in unnatural twists and bends.
Selene hadnât witnessed the first shift. She was still upstairs during the worst of my shift from man to beast, but she had been here in the morning when I shifted back. She had dragged my body from the grotesque pool and cradled my head in her lap until I came to.
How had she remained so calm through all of it! She hadnât batted an eyelash at discovering what I was. She hadnât even seemed surprised that something like me existed in the world. Even with watching the beast retreat back into my skin, melting away to the form of a man, she still remained calm through it all.
Her face came to my mind, my gaze locked on the door, where she had appeared so calmly in the face of true danger. My wolf form wasnât some cute and cuddly creature. It was grotesque. The things that nightmares were made of. A mutation. Neither truly wolf nor man. I was both in that form. How Selene hadnât turned heel and ran from me I would never understand. Anyone else would have. Even with all my training in the military and work with special forces I would still have ran had I come across a creature half as terrorizing as my wolf form.
Instead, Selene walked straight up to the cage. She barely jumped when I swiped at her in that failed attempt to scare her away. Still coming closer. Touching me. Petting me like I was some harmless pup she had picked from a litter.
More puzzling, the beast responded to her touch as such. Had we not been locked up I was sure he would have attempted to crawl on her lap and curl up like some small lap dog. He appeared exactly as she saw him. Even his thoughts were calm and puppy-like. Not a trace of the vicious monster Iâve always known him to be. I couldnât understand it. It was like she had placed him under some spell. As though she was his master, someone to obey, to serve.
