“Gemma!” Brooke exclaimed and pulled me into a tight hug at the door. Her red hair was long and flowing in large curls down her back. She had on an FC jersey just like me, but instead of a mini skirt and thigh highs, she had on skinny jeans. Both of us in ice blue Converse Chucks.

“Let her get through the door,” Dylan said to her as he rose from the dark oak desk, though there was no missing the amusement in his tone. His blond hair dyed black and cut to just above his ears for his role in a steampunk film. He came over and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

Their dog Rocco came up and jumped on my legs.

“Getting in on the excitement,” I mused at him.

“Rocco, get down,” Dylan said.

“He’s alright,” I said.

Rocco paid him no mind anyway. He wagged his whole lower body, and we all laughed. I walked in to look around their suite. My eyes were immediately drawn to the large baby blue velour chaise center of the room. It was fashioned with matching seats and a marble art. I especially was fond of the Art Deco styled parquet and the afternoon sun that shone brightly through the drawn curtains revealing a breathtaking view of the city.

“This is posh,” I said. “A far cry from the East Village, one and a half bedroom apartment we shared.”

“It’s a hotel, but to stay here is unbelievable really,” she said softly. “I’m thankful every day.” Dylan came to her and hugged her, and they gazed at each other.

I sighed and smiled. They looked in love. Before I could take a seat, Brooke strutted up to me and started singing Chicago’s “Nowadays.”

I’d always loved that musical. It was great. I missed singing with her, so I joined in. Once we got going, we were loud. Luckily for the people in the building, we were in tune as we harmonized the song.

I watched Dylan and the way he looked at Brooke. My heart melted. He was totally smitten.

We finished the song with two high kicks because Brooke knew Dylan liked when she did that.

“Do that, Gemma, and you’ll get out of the friend-zone with Knox,” he said. “I kid you not. He’ll be all over you.”

Brooke’s face reddened. “Shut up.” She went over and smacked his arm, and they laughed.

I rolled my eyes. “You two are horrible gossips.”

The sad part of it was that my head said. You think so?

I honestly didn’t know how Knox would react to that kind of blatant flirtation. Sure, we teased each other. We’d had a good kiss once, but hadn’t crossed the line.

“I was being serious,” Dylan said. “Helping them both out. Tyler said Knox has become a cranky monk.”

I suppressed a smile at that. That was a bit of news I hoped for, but was too afraid to confirm. I was glad I wasn’t the only one frustrated.

“Then he should go out and get someone,” Brooke said.

I bit the inside of my cheek.
