Danny and Ethan were staying in a middling hotel a few miles from the Club. I arrived promptly at seven, and was pleased to see Danny in the lobby waiting for me. He jogged over as I pulled the car up, and hopped in. Immediately the vehicle filled with his scent: a light, summery fragrance that reminded me of Lexi. He was dressed simply in black pants and a pale blue shirt which emphasised the blond of his hair and the deep cobalt of his eyes. The open neck displayed the sharply-defined hollows of his clavicle to perfection.

We made small talk for the few minutes it took me to drive to the restaurant. I’d booked the Edenwood, my favourite eatery in the borough, and was pleased to see that it didn’t appear to have changed in the year since I’d last been there.

A waitress showed us to a table near the back, well away from the windows and the curious glances of other patrons. We ordered food, drinks were served, and finally we were left alone to talk.

“Ethan was okay on his own?” I asked. I wasn’t sure leaving a fifteen year old to fend for himself in a foreign country was really a wise idea, even if it was only for a few hours, but Danny had insisted when I extended the dinner invitation to include his young charge.

“He’s fine.” Danny sipped from his glass of iced water. “He’s got a TV and I bought him a takeaway before I left.”

“He wasn’t too upset yesterday?”

Danny grimaced. “He’ll get over it. It’s all part of the game, right?”

“Right.” I nodded. “Still stings, though.”

“He’s a tough kid. He’ll be okay.”

“You’ve been working with him since he was how old, again?”

“Ten.”

“How did that happen?”

“I was working at an academy in Auckland, just part-time. Ethan went there. The two of us clicked, so his dad offered me a permanent job.”

“He wanted Ethan to turn pro?”

Danny laughed. “I think he was willing to embrace anything that calmed the kid down. He was hyper when he first started at the Club, out of control. His dad didn’t really have time to deal with him so when he took to tennis, he seized the opportunity.”

“He must be fairly well-off if he can afford to pay a full-time coach,” I mused.

“You have no idea.” Danny grinned. “The guy’s got fingers in pies all over. One of these business investment types, spends his life travelling all over the world. Never had much time for a little kid.”

“And Ethan’s mother?”

Danny shrugged. “No idea. The boss never talks about her, and Ethan said he never knew her.”

I gave a low whistle. “He’s not even curious?”

“Why would he be? As far as he’s concerned, she abandoned him.”

“Tough break.”

Danny nodded. “I think that’s half the reason he was as wild as he was when I first met him. The kid was starved for attention so he acted out.”

“He seemed a nice enough lad when I met him.”

“He really is.” Danny gave me a broad smile.
