After I hitched a ride on the shuttle leaving the Menagerie, I trudged upstairs and into my room. Paige was there, studying, by the looks of the books, tablet, and notebooks surrounding her on her bed.

She jumped up as soon as I shut the door behind me, wanting to know what happened, if I was okay, had I eaten, was I hurt. A ramble of concerns and questions. I held back a laugh, thinking what I was feeling probably mirrored the way Wolf had felt when I’d bombarded an interrogation on him in the woods an hour earlier. It wasn’t the first time I’d be on the receiving end of Paige’s mothering hen nature and it was easy to accept that she wasn’t being pushy but caring.

Once I stripped off my soaked and muddy clothes and stepped under the shower, I yelled out that she could come into the bathroom. For the majority of the forty-some minutes it took for the hot water to run out, she sat in the bathroom and listened to my account of what occurred this evening.

My skin was red and raw from the too-hot water, but I remained under the spray for a few more minutes after she said she was going to run downstairs and grab a dinner for me. Food sounded good, but the warm misting shower soothed me more.

When I was done, I toweled off and dressed in a cami and flannel pants. In the mirror, I saw the twin gashes from the umibaza’s talons. It’d be a battle mark visible to the world when I wore a tank top, but I still didn’t want any elven meds. It wasn’t a nasty-enough cut to warrant something so potent.

I stepped out of the bathroom and jumped a little at the person seemingly waiting for me in Paige’s and my dorm space.

It wasn’t like he’d never been in my dorm before. But seeing Flynn now raised too many conflicting emotions.

“Are you okay?” he stepped closer. His chestnut waves were due for a cut and some of it fell over his forehead as he ducked a little, coming to my eye level.

“Yeah.” I shrugged, hating how…awkward I felt around him now. We used to be so familiar with each other, so at ease. He came so close, nearly in my face, and heaved a deep breath.

“Lorcan.” He swallowed hard, like he’d been anxious and could finally relax at seeing me. His gaze dragged up and down as he gave me a once-over and then searched my face. “He just got back to our room and told me what happened.” With another step toward me, he reached for my upper arm and touched the bare skin there. I flinched, alarmed at the heat his touch elicited—a spark hotter than the boiling temperature of my shower. Gently, he eased me to turn and he cursed at the sight of my injury.

“It’s not that bad.”

He set his lips in a firm line. “It could have been worse.”

The sharpness of his frown set deeper.
