Social bookmarking can help
A final thought is about social bookmarking. Every time you submit an article, you need to social-bookmark it. Some of the most well-known social bookmarking sites are Reddit, Digg, Delicious and StumbleUpon. By social-bookmarking your articles, you will give them the potential to go viral.
A word about social bookmarking sites – one estimate says there are 15 billion discrete web pages (as opposed to websites). It is hard to make sense of it all. We can’t possibly remember where we have been; we need to pluck out the best pages and save them for later.
The old way is to bookmark, ie add a page to the favourites on your web browser. It is a bit messy and the problem is that your favourites list remains tied to just one computer. Social bookmarking is the new alternative; instead of using your browser, you use a social bookmarking website.
The basic idea is that you tag a site you like and place it at a social bookmarking site such as Delicious. When you tag a site, a window will open and ask you to put in additional information. You enter tags or key words so that you can remember what the page in question is about. With these tags, it will be much easier to find the site later – and it is a way to share your results with others. And that is the essence of social bookmarking sites – to share your favourite sites with others. Those looking for the same topics as you will look at other people’s opinions on pages and it will help them in their search.
Finally, participation in larger social bookmarking networks like Digg and StumbleUpon can really help you get known. When a company gets an article, video or other content Dugg or StumbledUpon, huge numbers of visitors see the content. This has the potential to create an avalanche effect which will drive more and more traffic to your site.
