Chapter 26

New Visions, New Skills

I took a breath and waded further out into the grotto’s pool. The smooth stones of the bottom felt slick against my bare feet. The water was cooler than I’d have liked for a bath, but thank Entara it wasn’t cold, either.

The glow of the cavern increased as more bioluminescence came from the high domed ceiling. At first I thought the glow was reflected off the water. But a squint around me revealed that the water itself had a strange little sparkle to it, like flakes of mica inside a slab of marble.

Archmage Feretta gestured towards me as I approached her. The water remained waist deep, but at the exact center of the cavern, it felt different. More charged, somehow. I half-expected to feel a static shock at any moment.

“Lie down and float on your back,” the Archmage instructed me. “Then just relax. You’ll find that you really can’t sink here in this part of the pool.”

I did as she requested, and Feretta moved so that she cupped my head in her hands. She looked down on me kindly as she first dribbled some water across my forehead and then my chin. I felt little sparks of sensation travel across my skin.

It felt refreshing, if a little alien. What’s more, it distracted me until I realized that what the Archmage said was true. The water felt dense enough to support my weight without any effort on my part.

“What next?” I asked. “What do I have to do?”

Feretta considered a moment. “Nothing, much. Just look at the ceiling. I’ll be guiding you when needed.”

I wasn’t sure what that meant, but I did as she asked. Overhead, there were colorful swirls of various minerals embedded in the surrounding rock. Ochre, lavender, bright green, and midnight blue.

Feretta’s hands gently supported the sides of my head. The water swirled around her fingers and into my ears, muffling my hearing. As it did so, the view overhead brightened, like the sun coming from behind a cloud.

The swirls of color began to rotate. Bands of color stretched out like long strands or whorls of gas. The colors moved around a tiny portal of light at the very center of the ceiling.

“This is trippy,” I murmured.

That is good, Feretta’s voice sounded in my head. At least I hope it is. I’m not sure what ‘trippy’ means, Sir Castillo.

“Wait, you can talk to me … the same way as Angela can? I mean, when she’s in her, ah, sword form?”

A dry chuckle resonated inside my head. Mind-to-mind communication is common among many magically gifted individuals or species. Now, do you perceive the tiny portal of light above us?

“Yeah, I do. I hear sounds coming from it.”

Think about the lost Swordmaidens. Then listen carefully. What do you hear?

I concentrated and did as she asked. “Wind rattling through tall, dry grass. Hoofbeats. The sounds of shovels on earth. Prybars on stone. Then … I think I hear screams!”

You’re sensing something darker than I expected. Go through that portal of light, Sir Castillo.
