Rosemary’s Interlude

Rosemary left the company of the sleepy kitsune and their human lover with a high-pitched sigh. Closing the door to their shared quarters behind her, she stretched and squeaked out a little meow as the sunrise greeted her in soft rays of orange and pink.

She made her way around the perimeter of the orphanage to her station—the kitchen. Her kitchen, really, for all intents and purposes. A deep breath filled her lungs as she blushed with pride at the thought. That kitchen was her very own—she was the master of it, without a doubt.

Oh, sure—she could have joined a tavern easily enough somewhere. She would have done well, but she’d also end up dealing with the grabby hands of drunken travelers and the fact that her skills were frankly worth way more than any roadside inn could charge. No, she was quite pleased with exactly where she’d landed, thankyouverymuch.

Though she’d never admit it to Harker, she had him to thank for her life at Hyle’s Orphanage. It bristled the fur on her ears to admit it, even to herself, but the boy saved her from a bad situation. What’s more, because of that snot-nosed brat, she found Eli and Alluria. Plus, Harker wasn’t turning out so bad after all.

That, of course, was largely thanks to Eli, though.

Rosemary opened the door to her kitchen and lit the lantern she’d left on the table nearest to the door. Eli had enchanted it to be strong enough to bathe the entire room in magical light—a rudimentary effect she’d seen several times before meeting him. Still, it was a handy skill to have.

Rosemary set out some flour and eggs and checked on the marinated cutlets of pork that she’d left sitting in a pot last night. It was all still there, looking delectably tender and ready to cook.

Today’s breakfast would be pan-fried biscuits with seven spices mixed into the batter, served with wildberry jam. For protein, of course, there would be the pork and a few eggs leftover.

The door opened, and Rosemary found herself smiling as a sleepy-eyed little wolf girl wandered inside, her yawning almost theatrically big. “Mornin’ Miss Rosemary,” she whimpered. “It’s so early.”

“You’re the one who wanted training, Mara,” the catgirl pointed out with a laugh. “Get over here, I’m just getting started.”

Rosemary let the wolf girl handle the biscuits, since she was far more interested in baking than searing meat. Granted, pan-frying batter wasn’t quite the same as baking, but the making of the batter was good practice, even if it was a bit basic for the girl’s current skill level.

Mara took a stirring spoon off of the counter and started cracking eggs and mixing in powder. “Do you have the cream?”

Rosemary nodded and fetched her some from the enchanted icebox in the corner. “Freshly chilled. Mix in the proper amounts.”

“What kind of buffs are you putting on the food today?”

Rosemary had considered the question a bit longer lately than usual. “Well, Harker, Kyriana, and Slepnir will be doing
