The value of one commodity in a given system only exists in a relation of value with the other commodities in the system, but when given expression by means of money, it appears quantitatively, as price. The merchant capitalist buys commodities at this price and takes them to another system. There, the commodities are placed into a different relation of value, appearing at a price higher than before. Thus, M–C–M′ (M+ΔM) becomes possible only by means of the differential in value-relations between two systems; thus, despite the fact that both C–M and M′–C (which constitute the surface of the M–C–M′ process) exist as forms of equal exchange, surplus value nevertheless emerges.
