The hydrochloric acid of the stomach is so strong that if a drop of it were placed on a piece of wood, it would actually eat through it. For that reason the walls of the stomach are protected by an alkaline substance that neutralizes the acid, a bicarbonate solution that keeps the stomach from digesting itself. Clearly, the right balance of acid and alkaline substances is necessary for the health and well being of the stomach.
