Dinner had been cold by the time the team made their way to the mess hall. No one made small talk. Tomorrow would be the beginning of the end for what Tessa suspected was another opportunity to outwit the witless. The more she came into contact with the evildoers of the world, the more she realized there was a high degree of stupidity in those who wanted to control with terrorism.

While pushing her food around with a disposable fork, she glanced up to watch Peshmerga devour her food with gusto. A part of her grasped the idea the woman might be hungrier than she’d ever been in her entire life. The group Peshmerga led, Daughters of Kobani, were known around the world for their fighting skills, ability to outwit, out shoot, and demolish the enemy. She’d seen them featured on popular news shows over the last few years. What they didn’t cover was how often they went hungry, got wounded without much in the way of medical help, were cold, and had no place to sleep but on dirty floors and missed their families.

“Want my dessert?” Tessa pushed her pudding to her.

She nodded as she dipped her spoon in and ate.

The others had said their good nights and wandered off, leaving her with the Kurdish fighter. Pouring herself a cup of coffee, she took one sip and realized it was cold. When Peshmerga chuckled, Tessa sent her a bewildered frown.

“I’m sorry. The people I fight with would love coffee even when cold. You are very lucky, Agent Scott, to have so many comforts. I know little of this kind of life.”

“I know. I’m sorry for the way I treated you earlier. I’m worried about Captain Hunter. He means a lot to me. You took a great risk coming here considering the way the Turks have treated you and your people over the years. I appreciate the information and how you took care of Naza and her sisters.”

“Of course.” She finished the pudding and sighed with satisfaction. “I have never had this before. I like it very much. I wish I could share such a thing with my sisters on the battlefield.”

“I’ll see what I can do when this is over. Come on. I’ll walk you to our quarters. It isn’t much, but the sheets are clean, and you can take a hot shower.”

They exited the mess hall into a chilly wind of evening. The moon was unusually bright. Although Tessa pulled the collar of her jacket up closer to her face, Peshmerga walked casually, unaffected by the temperature difference. It was a little embarrassing when she tripped over her own feet and felt the grip of the Kurdish woman’s hand on her arm to steady her.

“Thanks.” Tessa stopped and gazed up at the sky. “I guess I should stop pretending everything is going to be okay.”

“What do you mean? We will do our best to find the weapon.”

“I was thinking about Captain Hunter and how he would take my arm when I stared up instead of where I’m going.
