But Actuallyâ¦
Ninjas were just like you and I. Or at least you and I in 15th Century Japan. They looked like everyone else. They used ânormalâ weapons or indeed anything they could get their hands on and almost certainly didnât wear black.
One of the biggest misconceptions around the Ninja is their definition. While many may assume it focuses on killing enemies or secret weapons the actual meaning is derived from the term âShinobiâ â which you may have heard. While this phrase doesnât directly translate into one single phrase in English the general meaning is a combination of stealth, hiding and escape by any means.
The lesson here is that the Shinobi focused on evasion and observation, not outright combat or even using weapons. Their tenets ensured that they blended in with the populace.
Ninjas may have existed as early as the eleven hundreds but developed as an organized force of mercenaries, spies and killers for hire within the 15th, 16th and 17th Centuries. They undertook nasty and difficult tasks for those that could afford their services. As such it was important they could blend in and adapt to any situation.
In fact, Ninjas or Shinobi often took on the opposite role of the Samurai. While the Samurai were bound by strict honor codes and laws the Ninja were free to get the job done in any manner they saw fit.
Because of this improvised approach, the many stereotypes surrounding their activities become all the more spurious.
