CHAPTER SIXTEEN

"No expectations."

"Some fun and relief."

Fuck. They'd done this all wrong.

He'd done this all wrong.

They used to communicate so well about almost anything, and now it was like their messages kept getting mixed up. First, it had been about the past and all the emotions Kyle's leaving brought up. And now… Now Kyle had failed to make his point across yet again, if Shawn assumed that all he was after was 'some fun and relief'.

Or maybe it was all that Shawn was after.

Maybe Shawn had already rejected even the possibility of anything else between them and decided to go a different route.

You could ask, offered a voice at the back of his mind that sounded suspiciously close to his grandma's.

He could, of course. But if he could only have this, right here, for as long as Shawn would let him… Did he want to risk it? To go back to their stiff, awkward interactions if Shawn decided that Kyle was asking for too much, wanting too much, and pulled away again?

No. No, he didn't.

Besides, perhaps Kyle did expect too much. He'd already blown his chance once and yet he still hoped for Shawn to not only forgive him but to also jump into the unknown with him while Kyle didn't even have his life figured out past the next month or two.

Shawn had had a clear plan for his life for as long as they'd known each other and he'd found it stressful whenever Kyle declared that he'd just go with the flow. Shawn had grown used to it over the years and mellowed down in his worry, but he'd never understood it.

And what could Kyle offer him now? Nothing. Nothing but the words Shawn had no reason to believe.

Not yet, at least.

Kyle needed to do better. Not merely say the right things—if he ever even figured out what they were—but actually behave in a way that would make Shawn trust him again.

Maybe in time, Shawn would grow to want more from him, or maybe he wouldn't, but if Kyle didn't try to win him over, he would never know.

One thing was suddenly clear for Kyle, though—if he overstepped now, if he asked for too much, there would be no chance for them. Shawn obviously wasn't ready to believe him and Kyle didn't have enough proof to convince him, not after everything that had happened in the past. So he had to move slowly. He had to go back to his plan of winning Shawn over, not through a love confession, but through proving that he didn't have one foot out the door. That he'd grown up.

And now, he could also rock Shawn's world in bed, showing him how good they were together. How they fit.

Because, fuck, the sex was already fantastic, and they hadn't even reached the bed yet or gotten completely naked.

So for now, they would do it like Shawn wanted it—for fun and stress relief. And Kyle would do his best there.
