Chapter 4

“Ms. Bander, where is your son, Cody Bander?” Melody didn’t honestly know that he was missing until the police showed up, pounding on her door. Looking around the place that she’d managed to get from the government, she didn’t see him. “We know that he’s not here. Where is he so that we can speak to him? It’s come to our attention that you’ve left him alone again to fend for himself. Where is he?”

“If you know so damned much, why don’t you tell me where he is so that I can go and get him. Damn it, the fuck and back. Don’t you have anything better to do than to annoy me at—what time is it anyway? Six in the morning?” He told her the time. And the date in the event, he said that she didn’t know that either. “Eight at night? No, that can’t be right. I was supposed to be going out, and I know I left him a note to—well, if he’s not here, then he wouldn’t have read it. Where is he? If his sister has come to get him, I’m going to be really pissed. She’s not supposed to take him away from me, especially to another state.”

“Ms. Bander is here as well. Last I heard, she was looking for him as well.” Well shit. If Sin was here, then that meant that she knew that she’d left him to his own devices again. Melody should have left him some money this time. But that would have left her short on having enough for herself. And Melody thought of only herself. “Are you listening to me?”

“Not if I can help it. If you know where Sin is, then Cody is right there with her. She better not have left with him, or there will be hell to pay. I’m not shitting her this time. She ain’t his mom. I am.” The cop asked her if she ever acted like either one of her children’s mother. “Now that ain’t none of your business, is it? I got us a nice home that we live in. And most of the time, there is food on the table. I’ll have to be hitting up my daughter for some money for winter things for Cody.”

“You did that already, Sin told us. That’s why we figured you were gone. Did you spend it all on drugs and booze, Melody? Or did you gamble it all away?” He knew a great deal for not knowing where her boy was. Cody was her ticket to a lot of things, so she needed him here. “I’m speaking to you. Where is Cody?”

“How the hell do I know. He was here when I left him a couple of weeks—a couple of days ago. I was taking a nap, and he must have gotten out. I tell him over and over that, he can’t just be running around like that. How will I know where he is?” The cop asked her if it was two weeks or two days.
