I hear Gabriel call my name. We grab the torch from the room with the water and start down the hall only to see Gabriel and Storm before us, both bleeding and injured. In an instant, Gabriel grabs me and swings me into his arms. He holds me so tightly for a minute that it’s hard to draw in a breath, then he mumbles, “sorry,” and lets me go. But still, his hands are on me, his face seeming to memorize my own.

“Is everyone okay?” Blade asks from behind me.

I’m hugging him a second later too, and I whisper in his ear. “There was a dead creature near Ax, and he doesn’t seem like himself.”

He tenses and whispers back. “Did it look like a scaled human?”

I nod, and his grip tightens around me for the briefest moment before he lets me go. His face is a blank sheet as I study him, but I know something is going on behind his calm surface. Something that worries me. I also know enough to keep this to myself until I can ask him.

We hear sobbing in the distance. We all turn to the sound at once.

“What’s that?” Gabriel asks.

Storm’s face is hard to read in the torch light as he says, “we weren’t the only ones tested.”

We carefully make our way down the hall, and I see a doorway I’ve never seen before. But even as I step toward it, the hall begins to shake and the door closes. I want to know what’s inside, but I’m not about to duck in and leave my men behind.

“Any clue what that is?”

“That is a bad place filled with death,” Storm says, and his gaze meets and holds Gabriel’s.

“Was that where you were trapped?” I ask.

Neither man answers me.

“What happened in there?” I press.

“We got out alive,” Storm answers evasively. “Which is better than most.”

The quiet sobbing continues, and I make a promise to myself to find out what happened in that room. Even though it seems clear it’s pulled the two men together, even if they both look badly injured. We continue down the hall toward the sobbing, and Blade has his arm around Ax, helping him stumble after us.

When we get to the main room with the lone bulb overhead, the elementalists are there. The woman is collapsed over one of her men, the man with pale blond hair. He’s covered in blood, and his pale skin looks even paler, but I notice that his chest rises and falls. The other three men have bowed heads as they stand over him, and all of them are in rough shape. Their clothes are singed, torn, and blood has painted their skin red. The female elementalist doesn’t look any better...

“What happened?” I ask.

The woman doesn’t answer, she just continues to cry.

“An Adaro happened,” the man with red hair says, and there’s so much anger in the word that it surprises me.

“An Adaro?”

He nods. “He was trapped in the room with the water. The creature came.
