Chapter 57

We’d flown on at a reasonable height that afforded stealth without starving us of heat and oxygen. The land below had been filled with far more people and goods on the move than previously encountered. Cris suggested it was the first wave of tithe collections reaching the crossings into the Vale. I tried not to count the human lives, instead hoping that the flood would soon drop off to nothing when most of the Tulahr people took the offer of sanctuary with the dwarves.

We’d landed briefly in an abandoned farm. The doors had already been broken in and the place ransacked. I laid out the map once I’d righted the dining table.

Abby didn’t need any instruction and held her hand over the parchment. “The vampires are still in the mountain,” she explained, hovering over the monastery with greater precision.

I took that to be Broderick, not necessarily the others who were of a similar power. Her gift seemed to pick up the core entity that controlled all the other creatures. Victor and Isolde, Broderick, Raz’Gharag, and whatever else Hamon had summoned.

“The evil is moving deeper into the Downlands,” she said, her hand hovering near Feltham.

I tried to psychically guide it away before she opened her eyes and realised her home was probably gone. Along with Layton and everyone else in the town.

She finally reached the wealds and slowed down, concentrating harder due to its importance. Her probing senses finally settled on the western side of the river, a good few miles into the Glintweald. “There.”

“Wasn’t it there before?” I asked.

Abby came round and blinked a few times. “Pardon?”

“I was just saying that looks like it’s the same place as before. It’s not moved like the creature in the Downlands.”

“I can’t really remember,” she replied.

“I think you’re right,” said Cody. “The lich hasn’t moved from Bloodfang Citadel either. Does that mean it’s trapped there or just happy to stay put?”

I shrugged, not knowing the answer. “I hate to ask, Abby, but can you sense… well…”

“My father?”

“Yeah. I hate to ask,” I repeated, apologetically, “but, you know…”

She closed her eyes and covered the entire map meticulously. Eventually she opened them and looked at me. “I’m sorry. All I sense is a deep pain that covers the entire land.”

“That’s ok. Can you keep trying to sense him while we’re moving. I know it might be uncomfortable, but you’re linked to him in a way.”

“I will,” she agreed. “I’ll try and guide my dreams too. I’ve seen his past, so I might be able to see his present, and future. If we could see where he wants to strike, that would help, right?”

“It would really help, but only if you’re sure you’re up to it. I know how bad nightmares can be, and they must be worse when you know it’s real things you’re seeing.”

“If it helps us, I’ll manage,” she replied with a smile.

We flew from the farm and night fell again only a few shorts hours after dawn had broken. The sun
