CITY OF NO-SLEEP
by Vera Nazarian
Vera, who was one of the youngest writers I ever published, says she’s excited by having made it into this year’s anthology. I’m now getting more than twice as many stories as I can use, though years ago when I began these volumes, I really had to go out and beat the bushes for them. Now every year I have to reject stories I’d have greeted with what my younger son would have called “great squeechs of joy” when I first started. I can’t even make room for my own stories anymore.
Well, neither Vera nor I are all that young these days (four presidents later, including some two-termers), and instead of being a young and inexperienced editor, I’m an old hand. Vera is now working for a printer company doing tech support, specializing in barcode technology, whatever the heck that may be. (On second thought, don’t tell me, I don’t want to know.)
This story is in her Compass Rose universe, and she got the idea for this story while driving home late at night from her ten-year Pomona College reunion. She got a speeding ticket, which upset her so much that she thought “some good has to come out of all this,” and then a story idea popped into her head: “What is the true meaning of law?”
She dedicates this story to her friend Lauren Elaine Oliver, who helped her brainstorm it on Mount Baldy, and —to a lesser degree —to the cop who gave her the ticket. I guess that goes to show that “all things work together for good,” as Saint Paul said.
Congratulations on constructive use of a traffic ticket —I’d even give you some of mine, if I could still drive.
