Their lenience, generosity and peacefulness made Marcus and Lucius popular with the people. The prosperity they had enjoyed under Antoninus was not threatened by the ascension of these new emperors; instead, the people glorified Marcus and Lucius as being just as good as their beloved father. The coinage of the year 161 was stamped with the words “felicitas temporum”: happy times.

Of all the people overjoyed by the reign of the brothers, none were more so than their mutual tutor Fronto. Although at first he was too shy to address his letters to Marcus directly, soon he and Marcus were visiting again just as they had when Fronto had still been his tutor. While Fronto appears to have neglected Lucius a little at this point, they were still in regular correspondence – albeit Lucius's concerns being of a lower quality than Marcus's. While Marcus pondered philosophy and pursued the people's goodwill, Lucius asked Fronto to mediate in a dispute he was having with a friend over an actor's merits.
