UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE IS NOT ENOUGH

After examining all of these approaches to universal healthcare and their results, I had a big “aha moment.” As I dug deeper into this data, I discovered a discrepancy in our health outcomes, even for those in the US with excellent healthcare coverage. As I shared in chapter 7, it turns out that “the discrepancy in health between the US and its peer countries is apparent even among wealthy, well-educated, and white subgroups of the American public.”26 This went against what I had always thought, which was that health was tied to access to the healthcare system as well as socioeconomic status. This conventional wisdom is wrong—there’s more than that driving our health.

I touched on many of these complexities in chapter 7, when I discussed the social determinants of health and rising inequality. Here’s the key question: If other countries are getting better health outcomes for less money, does this mean they are doing a better job of spending their healthcare dollars? Or addressing the nonmedical factors (social determinants)? Or both?
