Devotion In Service

“I was in prison, and ye came unto me” (Matt. 25:36).

The time of training is a time of active service. When we know that we are in an important battle and also know that this battle will be victorious, then there is a radiance illumining all our daily adventures. These experiences need not be extraordinary, but one sees all kinds of work as a part of the victory and the building of the kingdom of God.

My father often said: “My name is on the shop, but it would be proper to have God’s name on the window. I am a watchmaker by the grace of God. It is God’s watchmaker’s shop.” When we start to see more or less everything from God’s point of view, then we always seek and find opportunities to help others.

In Brazil lives a very simple woman. She loves the Lord. Her friends went every week to a woman’s prison to take the gospel through preaching, singing and counseling. She could not take part in this for she could not do such things, but she had love in her heart! One thing she knew very well—baking cakes. She suggested to her friends that she go with them and take a cake with her. I got an invitation to speak there and I will never forget it. All the women in this prison came. The beginning was not pleasant. Before our admittance we were searched by the guards, our bags were opened, they fingered our clothes in case we had hidden something. But after that the women who had come with me started to sing hymns and I then brought the Word. Then, when we were through with everything, the moment came that seemed to be the climax for the prisoners.

Our friend brought in the cake she had made. She had brought a knife with her and had cut the cake into many little pieces. She had also brought along little pieces of paper in many different colors. Each piece of cake was nicely placed on one and offered to the women. In the love of her heart she had understood what colors mean for prisoners. It was a feast, a real feast; everyone was happy. People laughed, everyone was kind to one another—and when we departed, we left these women with a blessing in their hearts. Poor stranded lives, murderesses and thieves, but they had heard the Word of God and they had experienced the love of God through the kindness of this simple woman! Every week she does that and the women know and count on it—that after the preaching of the gospel this little treat comes too. Yes, everyone can work in this training time. This simple, faithful woman will one day hear: “I was in prison and you came to Me and gave Me cake.”

In Australia I was at a very big meeting and at the end I invited the people who wanted to be saved to come forward. The first who came were two little girls.
