Chapter Seven

Kayden could not quite believe what had just happened. He walked after Matías. “Wait a minute,” he said. “Is something wrong?”

Matías did not stop or answer. He just kept on walking.

“Matías, please tell me,” Kayden insisted.

Matías began walking faster again. Kayden walked faster too. “You are being ridiculous, just tell me what it is.”

Matías still ignored him. Fine then. He would carry on walking after him all day, if that was what it took.

Echoes of Grant came back to him, but this was different. He felt something deeper this time. When Grant had treated him coldly he had been sad, but more than anything angry and confused. Grant had not been the best thing to happen to him, and it was easy to let Grant go.

Matías had so much potential. At least for friendship, if not for a continued relationship. It might have started out as a crazy fling, but there was so much more he wanted to talk about with Matías, and so much more he needed to learn about him.

“Just stop following me,” Matías said, spinning around on his heels. “Just let me go, okay?”

“No, I'm not going to because that back there made no sense at all and I at least need to know what the fuck it meant,” Kayden said.

“It meant I am not going to see you anymore. Never again. Forever,” Matías replied. “That is what it meant.”

Kayden felt his heart weaken a little. “But why? We were getting along so well and we like one another. I mean, we could just keep this going. Even if only for a week.”

“No, we can't,” Matías replied. “We can't do this. This relationship is never going to work out right.” He looked on the verge of crying. Or hitting something. Or both.

“Why not?” he asked. “Why can't we?” He could feel a sadness welling up inside him.

“Because I don't need to fall for a guy,” Matías replied.

“What do you mean?” Kayden asked, putting his head on one side. “That makes no sense.”

“You are hot, and funny, and we have a lot of shared interests and it is too much. I don't want to fall for you. You were meant to be a fling, a one-night stand or maybe someone to buy me lunch. I can't feel anything for you,” Matías explained. “I can't see you anymore because I like you and want to get to know you better and it will never work.”

“So, because we have too much in common you never want to see me again?” Kayden asked, incredulous.

“It might sound stupid to you, but everyone leaves, Kayden. You're on vacation. You're not here to stay and when you go back home I will be left with a broken heart,” Matías explained.

“Well maybe I could move here if it works out?” Kayden asked, shrugging.

“I don't want more guiris living in my city,” Matías replied. “We locals struggle enough to get jobs as it is.”

“Guiri?” Kayden asked.

“Foreigners, you might say,” Matías replied.

Kayden was going beyond confusion now.
