Writer, journalist, and friend of Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Fluent in French and Russian, he served as interpreter for Fidel Castro on many occasions. In 1971 he went into exile, and in 2010 he died in Paris.

ARCOS, GUSTAVO (1926-2006)

Cuba’s ambassador in Brussels and veteran of the attack on the Moncada Barracks. He was jailed in 1966 and died in Cuba.

ARENAL, HUMBERTO (1926-2012)

Writer and theater director who since 1948 lived in New York and visited Cuba regularly. After the Revolution, he returned to Cuba at Guillermo Cabrera Infante’s urging and remained there for the rest of his life.

Composer of classical music, lawyer, and former brother-in-law of Guillermo Cabrera Infante (married to Ivonne Calvo, the sister of Cabrera Infante’s first wife). Blanco got the writer out of jail when he was detained on obscenity charges.

Writer who participated in the guerrilla struggle with Che Guevara. During the period of the book he was sugar minister.

Dancer of popular music, married to Silvano Suárez, a friend of Guillermo Cabrera Infante. She died in Cuba.

CABRERA INFANTE, ALBERTO (SABÁ) (1933-2002)

Younger brother of Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Cineaste, co-creator with Orlando Jiménez Leal of the short film PM. In 1965 he sought political asylum in Rome and in 1966 he moved to New York. He died in the United States a few years before Guillermo Cabrera Infante.

CALVO, MARTA

First wife of Guillermo Cabrera Infante, mother of his daughters, Anita and Carolita, and sister of Sara and Ivonne.
