Change a Flat

You might change a handful of flat tires in your life, but when it needs to be done, it needs to be done right. Especially when it’s some beautiful damsel in distress on the side of a cold, dark road. Master the simple technique of switching a bad tire for a good one, and you stand a chance of being her knight in shining armor (well, a little greasy from the tire work, but still shiny).

Make sure the car is turned off and the parking brake is on. The car should be positioned as far off the road as possible, with the flashers on (and using a road flare or two isn’t a bad idea either). Pull the jack and spare out of the trunk and look for a solid mounting surface for the type of jack you’re using. Some cars have a notch in the frame to accommodate the jack face. Most others require the jack be posted under a solid portion of the frame. Don’t put it under the suspension, under an unstable part such as a door, or under any part of the drive train such as the engine or transmission.

Before you start jacking up the car, use the lug wrench to “break” the lug nuts that hold the tire on. Then jack it up and unscrew the nuts the rest of the way by hand. Remove the damaged tire and slide the spare into place on the lug bolts. Tighten the lug nuts hand-tight, and then crank them once with the wrench. Lower the car, and finish up by tightening the lug nuts securely. Always tighten the nuts in a star pattern, or crisscross if there are only four. Stow the gear and ruined tire, and you—and your damsel—are good to go.
