Chapter 15

Hin’Rik Crawly realized his miscalculation the moment he saw Femili Primme descend the grand staircase into the ballroom of Mansfield Park. He had taken it upon himself to invite every single AiJalonian there was in the nearest three archipelagos to the summit announcing Femili’s eligibility. He had even instructed them to pay special attention to Femili. Hin’Rik accurately predicted that the inordinate amount of attention on Femili would cause both Marziah and Ju’Lya to melt like butter in his hand. But he inaccurately predicted his own feelings toward the sight of Femili. He knew she was attractive; he knew she was intriguing; but until he saw her dressed in formal island wear, he had no idea that she was absolutely mesmerizing. There was no need to instruct any of the perspective suitors to pay special attention to her. At this point, he would have to pay men to ignore her so that he could get a moment alone with her. And suddenly, that was all he wanted. Just one moment in her presence.

Edwin was strangely comforted to see how much attention Femili commanded. It was reassuring to see that his attraction to her was not unwarranted. It was not irrational to believe she was beautiful even though she was half human. He wouldn’t have cared if it was though. Even if he was the only one in the galaxy to believe she was lovely he was completely fine with it. He also delighted in the knowledge that she would not be alone. There would be someone out there who would earn the privilege to marry her. Someone who would take care of her. No one would be worthy of her, but if tonight was any indication, there were plenty out there willing to try.

“Are you in awe of your cousin?” Meril asked as the evening progressed.

“Yes,” Edwin answered without thinking. He then cleared his throat and attempted to offer a truthful, yet not incestuous explanation. “She certainly looks the part of a prestigious AiJalonian woman. She will—” Edwin paused and took a deep breath before continuing. “She will marry well and bring honor and status to our family.”

“Indeed,” Meril agreed. “And what about you? Have you any thoughts to your own marriage?” Meril wasn't quite sure why she asked such a thing. Did she really care whether he intended on marrying or not? Wasn’t this all just a game? She had already gotten a tremendous amount of points from Edwin on their first encounter, but given that he was the only male Berzam around, he was her only hope to defeat Hin’Rik and he hadn’t so much as held her hand since their first kiss. She had to take things further. Meril wondered where his erogenous zones were. For AiJalonians, it was usually their gill flaps. She reached out to caress his when suddenly Ju’Lya approached.

“Where did she get that gown, Edwin?” she asked.

Meril lowered her hand and sighed. This petty child was getting in the way of her progress.
