Managing a Team: 50 to 75 Members
As the team grows, managers and skips don't have the time to know everyone personally. So, the focus of the managers is directed toward creating and implementing ranks and flanks. The organizational architecture is the guiding light, which reforms the organization in a way to make the multitude of tasks happen in the scheduled time, even if it takes realigning people from one or various departments to ensure timely delivery of results. The managers need to define practices in order to be able to delegate more and scale up the output, along with constantly reinforcing the team's and organization's vision and values. Achieving this kind of cohesion becomes more complicated as the organization grows.
When the team size increases it is very important that the managers themselves also scale up. Managerial skills are challenged in unforeseen ways once the team size starts to take up more work and responsibilities. The role of subordinates as well as skip managers becomes more serious and impactful. An important aspect of ensuring that the team management is culturally aligned depends on how an existing manager, who might be exiting, onboards and handovers the tasks to an incoming manager who may or may not be coming from the same kind of business background and practice. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com Inc. had given some words of wisdom on effectively handling teams: It's popularly known as the two-pizza team rule, which seems to suggests that the number of relevance of keeping direct reportees of a person should to be not be more than what two pizzas can feed; that is, approximately eight team members. The moment a manager has up to eight reportees, it's time to create a new team so that there is efficient and effective collaboration between employees. During the stage where a company is of growing in terms of manpower, specially from 25 to around 75 members, the management should make sure to have a good mix of internal promotions as well as external hires. All the managers need not be promoted from within the organization. Hiring a few managers from other universes lends a balance of growth and competitive spirit within the organization.
