SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis

Vignette 5.1 provides an example of how football teams conduct SWOT analyses of their own internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as their external opportunities and threats as posed primarily by their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. The analysis of opportunities and threats is not just in relation to their opponents, but must also take into consideration other factors in their environments. For example, teams from the Pacific West Coast that travel to play teams in the Atlantic East Coast tend to be at a temporary competitive disadvantage due to the lasting effects of jet lag. For this reason, some traveling teams will go to the cities where they will be playing a couple of days earlier so that their “body clocks” and circadian rhythms can adjust accordingly. The same holds true for teams from the East that travel out West. Certain teams, such as the Denver Broncos (due to the high altitude) and the Miami Dolphins (due to the heat and high humidity) enjoy considerable home field advantages over visiting opponents. Figure 5.8 provides a simplified illustration of what a SWOT analysis would look like. Typically, there are more than just three items under each of the quadrants.
