THE POWER OF “CRITICAL INCIDENTS”

A situation that calls for great awareness on the part of the manager is considered a “critical incident.” A critical incident is a time of pressure, stress, or challenge for the manager. It usually involves a task, project, or responsibility. Often, negative emotions and fear are also associated with the critical incident, such as fear of failure, fear of embarrassment, fear of criticism, fear of loss, or fear of losing prestige.

Managers are often blind to the shadow they cast due to the anxiety experienced during a critical incident. They, however, send out messages loud and clear for others to see, hear, and imitate at such times, so they need to be acutely aware of their shadow when they are “under the gun.”

We tell managers all the time, “What you do in a critical incident gives the members of your team permission to do exactly that, even when they are not in a critical incident!”
