When I get home neither of my parents are surprised to see how pregnant I am. Mom even smiles at me with a little bit of vengeance. I know she did it on purpose and I can do nothing but go up to my room and change my clothes.

I put on a pair of spandex shorts that are way too short and a white t-shirt that is stretched to the max over my wide belly. I stick my hands on my lower back because it hurts so much as I go back down the stairs. Mom is in the living room nursing the new babies while all the other kids play around her.

“You need to make everyone dinner.” Mom says coolly.

Tears fill my eyes. “Mom, can we talk about this, please?”

“Now. Or you’re out of a place to live.”

There’s nothing I can do. I can’t be homeless and knocked up like this. I turn back toward the kitchen and Mom calls out to me. “This is all your fault. You should show me more respect, Jess. Tomorrow we’ll take you to the doctor after your classes. Find out how many you’re having.”

I know it’s at least two, but I don’t say that. I just hurry into the kitchen and start to think about dinner. But Dad is there and he’s staring at my belly like he’s in awe of it. Like he wants to touch it. Stroke it. So gross.

“Haven’t you done enough damage.” I say to him and throw a package of frozen beef onto the counter.

Dad only smiles as he drinks his coffee. “None of this would be happening if you were nicer to your mother. Now look at you, you’re stretching wide and fast.”

And God help me, In a few days I was going to be a mom.
