Carter passed the time channel surfing between four different programs, none of which really interested him. Three men entered the room. Carter’s friend, Bobby from Chicago PD led the way, followed by two guys wearing suits.

Carter hit the power button on the remote and sat up more.

“Hey, buddy,” greeted Bobby.

“Hey, Bobby,” said Carter. “How did you know I was here?”

“You haven’t been gone from the department that long and word travels fast. Are you alright?”

“Yeah, pretty sore, but I’m okay. I have a concussion.”

Bobby gestured toward the two guys with him. “This is Detective Frank Anderson and Detective Guy Nolin.”

Frank Anderson, the older of the two stepped forward to greet Carter. He appeared to be in his late forties to early fifties, with a potbelly putting pressure on his shirt buttons and a tie that was too short. His neatly combed dark brown hair was obviously dyed, in sharp contrast to his white mustache. “Hello, Mr. Mays.”

Guy Nolin was a much younger man, especially for a detective.

Carter figured him for one of the extremely ambitious go-getters who are able to take the fast track from the academy to the high ranks of the department.

His tailored and fashionable wardrobe seemed much more Esquire magazine than Chicago PD. He simply nodded his head and smiled, letting his counterpart take the lead.

“Mr. Mays,” said Detective Anderson. “I’m sorry about your house. According to the Fire Marshall, it was definitely arson.”

“Really?” Carter asked, his mind immediately fixating on Jasper Bedford and his so-called employees, particularly the one with a background in arson. Anger began to set in.

“Yes, sir. But that’s not the only reason we’re here.”

“What’s the other reason?”

“A man was found shot to death in the front seat of his car, parked on your street, just one house down from yours.”

“Homicide or self-inflicted?” Carter inquired,

“Homicide. Shot from three feet or less.”

“Wow.”

Detective Nolin handed a large yellow envelope to his partner who removed photographs and handed them to Carter. “Do you know this man?”

Carter took the photographs and immediately recognized the victim slouched over in the blood-stained front seat of a car. It was Bedford’s man, Dan Yielding, the arsonist.

“Yeah, I’ve seen this guy before,” said Carter, looking at Bobby, but not disclosing anything about the files Bobby provided.

“Where have you seen him?”

“He was in my office a couple of days ago.”

“May I ask why he was there?” Frank inquired.

“Actually, it was his boss who came to see me. This guy was just a background figure.”

“His boss?” Detective Nolin spoke up for the first time.

“Yeah,” confirmed Carter.

“Who is his boss?” Detective Anderson asked, taking back the lead from his younger partner.

“Jasper Bedford. He owns West Lake Properties & Development.”

Detective Nolin perked up at the mention of Jasper’s name and he tapped Anderson on the shoulder.

“Bedford? Isn’t that the rich guy perv picked up for trying to meet a teenager this week?”

Anderson shrugged. “I don’t know. I didn’t hear about it.”

“That’s him,” offered Carter.

“So what was your business with him? Is he a client?”

“No. He came to talk about his daughter who is a client.
