Ipoh was the next RAF airfield to come under concerted attack. On December 14, the two squadrons present (453 and 21 RAAF) had no Buffalos operational. More were sent to the airfield so that there were enough for a standing patrol of four fighters on the 15th. These engaged a large raid by Ki-48s from the 90th Sentai and shot down one. On the 17th, the Japanese returned in greater strength with 59th Sentai Ki-43s and two waves of bombers. The raid was intercepted by Buffalos, but two were shot down by Japanese fighters and another forced to crash-land. The bombers destroyed two more Buffalos on the ground and damaged another. The following day, the Japanese kept up the pressure with two more raids by 59th Sentai Ki-43s and 90th Sentai Ki-48s. Two more Buffalos were destroyed on the ground and three more damaged. By the 19th, only seven Buffalos were operational at Ipoh, and two of these were caught on the ground and destroyed by a surprise bomber attack in the morning. Later in the day, the RAF abandoned Ipoh and ordered the remaining aircraft south to Kuala Lumpur.
