The Japanese advanced so fast they drove deep into the rear area before units there could be warned to prepare. At 0735 the tanks drove into an Indian battalion moving forward along the road without any anti-tank weapons at the ready, and shattered it. Ten minutes later they destroyed three anti-tank guns moving forward to support the Argylls, before they could be unhitched from their tractors. At 0800 they drove right past a Gurkha battalion dug in overlooking the road, but it had no anti-tank weapons and could only watch them advance. Minutes later they drove into another Gurkha battalion moving along the road, and destroyed it.

The two batteries of field guns resting off the road were next, destroyed before they could be brought into action. Four anti-aircraft guns defending the bridge over the Slim River tried to stop the tanks, but were destroyed. The rampage finally stopped four kilometres south of the bridge, when the tanks ran into a battery of British field guns moving to the sound of the guns. The 25 pounders stopped the tanks at point blank range over open sights. The Japanese tanks pulled back to wait for their infantry.
