CHAPTER FOUR

Marissa gave me a special smile the next Monday morning. "Hey," she said. "I wasn't sure I'd see you today."

"Why not?" I asked.

"After Friday night, I thought you might want to take a few days off. Sleep in. Recuperate," she said with a grin.

I smiled guiltily. "It was pretty intense," I admitted.

"Amina had a good time."

"That's good. So did I."

"Amina almost never has a good time."

"Things went well."

"That's what she said."

"Do you think I should…"

"No!" she said, as if scolding a disobedient dog. "You should not call her. Amina doesn't do relationships. Besides, you'll be meeting someone new on Friday."

I took a deep breath. OK, I could do this. Marissa's friends were taking me way out of my comfort zone, but there was no denying that I was getting way more sex than usual. "Great," I said with as much enthusiasm as I could manage. "Who this time?"

"You'll see," Marissa said with the sort of smile that didn't encourage me in any way.

Four days later I found myself in front of a brownstone apartment, feeling encouraged. This wasn't a bad part of town. Anyone who lived in a building like this had to have a job, and she was probably respectable. Maybe tonight would turn out to be dinner and pleasant conversation: the sort of thing I was used to.

I walked up the steps and looked through the names on the directory. When I found the name I was looking for, my stomach dropped. She lived in the basement. Already things were going bad.

I rang the bell. After a pause, a woman's voice came over the intercom.

"Yeah?"

"Chloe? Is this Chloe? I'm Dave." There was a pause. "Marissa's friend?" I added.

"Oh, right. Dave. Come on in. Take the stairs down." The door started to buzz and I pushed my way in.

The lobby of the building was actually pretty nice, but when I started down the stairs things started getting dark and musty. I knocked on the door at the bottom of the steps, but it swung open on its own.

"Hello?" I called, taking a few tentative steps inside. The apartment was dark, lit only by a few candles, and from what I could see of the art on the walls, Chloe was a very strange girl indeed. Par for the course—I was starting to expect that sort of thing from Marissa's friends.

"I'll be there in a second," a woman's voice called from down the hallway. "Make yourself comfortable."

I looked around what I took to be the living room, looking for a piece of furniture that seemed safe to sit in. One contraption in the corner was puzzling me. It was a big wooden frame, with what looked like scraps of leather fastened to it. In the dark it was hard to make it out. Was it exercise equipment? A piece of art? I couldn't figure it out.

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!"

The shout was so loud that my heart leaped into my mouth and I twirled around so quickly, I nearly fell down.
