Toys

•I urge my clients to use a one-to-one ratio: for every gift received, something must be donated. An upcoming birthday or a visit from the grandparents who come with suitcases full of toys is the perfect time for a proactive purge.

•I recommend involving the kids as much as possible so they learn how to let go and you can start modeling for them that you value a clutter-free space as a family. For five-year-olds and up, I like to put a big bin in the middle of the room and let them have first crack at filling it with what they think they can let go of. Then we go in and do a second round. “Do you really still play with this [headless] doll? Really?” That can usually shake loose another whole garbage bag. Lastly, there’s the “wait until they’re at school to take out the toys you know they haven’t touched in months or years” approach. Also very efficient.
