Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell. Murray Rae

Whereas the architectural style of Towle’s original design for the cathedral was clearly European, thus reflecting Pākehā New Zealand’s enduring allegiance to the culture of Europe, Toy’s nave has distinctly Māori and Polynesian architectural references. The forecourt and north front evoke the wharenui and the marae, while the stained glass windows make extensive use of Polynesian motifs. The juxtaposition of styles has drawn criticism, but whether successful or not in aesthetic terms, the building does reveal the changing conceptions of who we are as New Zealanders. Dependence upon the cultural heritage of Europe has weakened and we have become more confident about asserting our identity as a people of the South Pacific. Interestingly, the architectural style of Toy’s nave has been described on yet another tourist website as the world’s only example of ‘Pacific Gothic’.8
