Figure 4.6. Floorplan for a cattle-fattening barn. The walls pictured on the top, bottom, and left were kept open to properly ventilate the barn and allow the feeder cattle access to the lot. The two loose cattle pens on either side of the middle alley allowed the feeder to access the elongated feed bunks from the middle of the barn, which connected to the hopper-bottomed feed bins, the feed mixing room, and the silos. Above the alley were access points to the hay mow. The length of the barn was variable based on the number of feeder cattle. Each animal needed thirty inches at the bunk.
