Step 2

Now use the scrim to remove more of the ink from the upper and smoother surfaces, while at the same time ensuring that it is firmly pushed into all the textures of the plate.

Fig. 4.18 It is important not to scrub at the plate as it is wiped, as this will remove ink from the textured areas. Use a firm, circular motion.

Step 3

Place the plate on a piece of clean newspaper. Use the prepared ball of scrim to wipe the plate firmly using a circular motion, beginning to clean ink off the upper areas while pushing it into the lower parts; ink can be wiped off onto the newspaper, which will make the process a little quicker. As the scrim becomes clogged with ink, shake it out and refold it to find cleaner areas. Carry on this process until the upper and shinier surfaces of the plate are clear of ink; the time this takes will depend on the size and construction of the plate, as well as the consistency of the ink and the effect desired for the final print, and is something that you will learn to gauge with experience. Use a clean piece of scrim to finish.
