The lecture was not particularly clear or organized, and it certainly was not practiced, but clearly Minsky was passionate about the idea that a computer could do advanced mathematical manipulation. As I walked out, I said to my friend, âI want to do what he does.â I was inspired.
Exhibit your passion explicitly
How do you let your students know you are passionate about what you are teaching? One way is to just tell them:
There you have it, a program that tells us Macbeth is about revenge and Pyrrhic victory. What could be cooler than that!
So there it is, a program that can be said, in a suitcase word way, to be self-aware. I think that is interesting beyond description!
No doubt about it, 99% of your DNA is the same as that of a chimpanzee. I can tell you without a doubt that I think that 1% must be pretty important!
Picasso painted Guernica in response to the 1937 destruction of a Basque village in northern Spain by Nazi German and Fascist Italian bombers. I cannot think how anyone could look at the painting without feeling its incredible anti-war message!
Words matter, and Kennedyâs words mattered a lot. In 1962, he said we would go to the moon in that decade, and we did. It was a masterpiece! It inspired the nation! It inspired me!
