Hydrostatic Testing Hydrostatic testing is another NDT method for detecting defects that completely penetrate pressure boundaries. Hydrostatic testing is typically conducted prior to the delivery or operation of complete systems or subsystems that act as pressure boundaries. During the hydrostatic test, the system to be tested is filled with water or the operating fluid. The system is then sealed, and the pressure is increased to approximately 1.5 times operating pressure.

This pressure is held for a defined period. During the test, inspections are conducted to find visible leaks as well as monitor pressure drop and makeup water additions. If the pressure drop is out of specification, any leaks must be located and repaired. The principle of hydrostatic testing can also be used with compressed gases. This type of test is typically called an airdrop test and is often used to test the integrity of high-pressure air or gas systems.
