CHAPTER 8

The next day they pulled into Olympia around three. Jason had hustled them onto the road early, leaving their campsite around seven o’clock according to her pin watch.

He stopped the wagon in front of the Grand Hotel.

The large pale yellow three-story building looked well maintained, and Rachel was ready to get off the wagon for a while. Even though Jason had stopped every couple of hours so they could stretch, her bum was none too happy with the hard seat, and neither was her back. She thought she’d get used to the lack of comfort when they traveled, but this time the trip was painful.

After Jason helped her down, she walked around in a circle, stretching her legs.

“I’m so looking forward to sleeping in a real bed tonight.”

“I know the bed wasn’t the most comfortable, but you’ll be glad of the wagon bed when we head back. We’ll have to sleep on the ground then.”

She stopped walking in front of him. “Don’t remind me. Do you suppose the hotel has a bathing room?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve never actually stayed here before, but we can certainly ask.”

“Oh, where do you stay when you come?”

Carrying their valises, Jason followed her up the steps to the hotel. “Usually with the wagon at the stable since it’s just one night if any. Most of the time we come in get our supplies and leave for home again the same day.”

“Well, I’m glad we’re staying here for a few days. I’m not looking forward to our return trip.”

“When we go home, I’ll make an effort to keep you warm, and we’ll use our coats as blankets, too. We’ll be cozy. I promise.”

Rachel enjoyed his caring attitude toward her and the effort he was making to see she was comfortable. She looked him up and down then cocked her head to the side. “I suppose I trust you. But for right now, let’s get checked in and see about a bath.”

Entering the lobby from the boardwalk was like entering an entirely different world. The lobby was decorated in vibrant blues. The Oriental carpet in front of the desk held a beautiful starry design in midnight blue. The floor was wood, oak maybe, she didn’t know, but it was polished to a high sheen. To her right, a sofa and single Queen Anne chair, both covered in light blue damask, formed a conversation area in front of the window.

To her left was a restaurant, and lovely smells emanated through the door into the lobby where they stood.

“Mmm. Something smells good.” She closed her eyes and sniffed.

The young red-haired woman behind the counter smiled. “That would be today’s special roast beef dinner. Cook is from England and always makes a Yorkshire pudding to go with the roast. A favorite meal around here, so if you want some, I recommend getting seated as soon as possible.”

Rachel looked up at Jason. “We missed lunch today so I am rather hungry. How about you?”

He nodded. “Yeah, me, too. Just as soon as we get a room key from this young lady, we’ll go eat.
