Day 6, Midmorning

The first thing that struck Sydney was the cold, and it literally struck her. It seemed as if ice, snow, and something cold kept flicking onto her cheek and off again. She struggled to reach up and brush it off, covering what was very tender skin at this point, only she couldn’t move her arms or her hands. She shifted, horrified to find she was completely constricted.

She twisted her face, trying to hide it from the cold searing into her skin. Numbness started to take hold. Body movement was so important in order to stay warm, but, numb as she was, she would be in the worst shape possible. She cried out, “Where am I? What’s happening?”

Her body involuntarily shifted all over the place. As she bounced and moved swiftly, she noted that the cold was mostly coming from the wind and that the rest of her was bundled up in some fur. She tried to snuggle in deeper and get that exposed cheek covered up. She managed to do it somewhat, when somebody—whoever was here with her—seemed to understand the problem and pulled a fur covering over her face.

One problem aside, she assessed the next. There was no light, no nothing. She was glad enough to know that she could breathe, and, for that, she was grateful. The fur now covered up the icy feel on her face and would also filter the cold air, so she could breathe easier. She was tied to a sled, and probably dogs were mushing her through this cold.

For whatever reason, she had been kidnapped. She waited the longest time, until suddenly the sled slowed, and she thought she heard other voices. She was taken, still bundled up in these furs, into some building because almost immediately the cold fell away, and the noise increased.

Her ropes were untied, and she was picked up—still in this bundled-up blanket—and carried over somebody’s shoulder. She tried to cry out, but nobody cared. Of course they didn’t. Did they even know who she was, or was she just a random victim? When she was dropped none-too-gently onto a softer surface than she expected, the blanket was roughly snatched up from her, and she shivered as the cold hit her. She wrapped her arms around herself.

Of course she hadn’t come out prepared for winter travel, and the blankets she had been wrapped up in, although great, had now been removed. She stared up at the stranger’s face and cried out, “Who are you, and what do you want with me?”

He didn’t say anything but pointed. She turned to find a man stretched out in a makeshift bed. She recognized him as one of the missing men from the military base, from photos of each shared all over the base.

She immediately bolted to her feet and dropped down at the man’s side. She glared over at the man who had kidnapped her. “Why is he here? He should be back at the camp.”

He just shrugged and didn’t say anything.
