CHAPTER SEVEN - BRING ME THE TALL ONE
There was only an hour before Jacâs first show for the day and no time to waste. Now that he had only two days to make the puppets he needed the wood as soon as he could get it.
The groomer loaned him a horse and he rode off to the north where he knew of a small forest. It would be almost a half-hour ride out there so he would not have much time to look for suitable wood. He spurred the horse on, not meaning to be unkind but desperate to get back in time and avoid Mr Blyne's bad temper.
âFaster. Faster,â Dan shouted, bouncing up and down happily as he clung to the saddle with his little wooden fingers. Jac did not dare leave him behind at the camp in case he was seen. Danel could not look after him as he had a new routine to learn that Mr Blyne had insisted be ready for the wedding show.
They made good time to the forest and Jac jumped down and tethered the horse to a tree. He began searching the forest floor for a suitable fallen limb and Dan clattered along after him. They had been searching for about ten minutes and Jac had just found one just big enough for both puppetsâ heads when they heard a loud boom.
âWhat was that?â Dan cried out as the noise echoed through the trees and shook the ground. He leapt up into Jac's arms and the bough fell to the ground.
âI don't know,â Jac admitted. The sound had come from somewhere up ahead and he went to see what had caused it.
âDan go home.â The puppet's voice was a mere whisper and he was shaking but Jac could hear voices and he wanted to see who it was.
He stopped as the trees thinned out to form a small clearing and they both peered around a tree. What Jac saw made him regret being so inquisitive.
In the middle of the clearing stood a man and a group of six trolls. The man was the one who had ridden past them two days ago. And the trolls, who stood before the man, were the ones who attacked the camp. The man looked furious and there was a small patch of burnt grass in front of him but it didn't look as if there had been a campfire.
âWhat do you mean? If I say you will go into Sweetwater to fetch the boy... then you will. I'm sure of which one it is now so you only need to bring me the tall one,â the man boomed.
The tall one. That would be him! Jac shrank back behind the tree.
âBut Archmage Ivan, Sir. Trolls are not permitted in Sweetwater. We will be locked up as soon as we are seen,â one of the trolls protested and Jac froze. This was the archmage? He peered around the tree again and looked at the man. He looked ordinary enough, if a little strange with his choice of clothes.
