Cohabitation? The Resurgent Classical Film Score and Songs in the Batman Films

Music was and continues to be an integral part of the multimedia phenomenon of Hollywood blockbuster films. This is highly evident in the Batman series of films. Danny Elfman wrote the musical scores for Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), and they provide a continuity across the films along with director Tim Burton and Michael Keaton as Batman. Elfman’s music had a significant impact and elevated his reputation for engaging and effective film scores. Both films also illustrate how dramatic musical scores are forced to work alongside popular songs. This is also highly evident in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (1995) and Batman and Robin (1997). Although not discussed here, Christopher Nolan’s subsequent ‘Dark Knight Trilogy’ (Batman Begins [2005], The Dark Knight [2008] and The Dark Knight Rises [2012]) avoid use of popular music, allowing full license to their orchestral scores. This chapter asks how films negotiate songs as well as score. There are narrative, aesthetic and financial concerns which compete and together determine how music that mixes songs and score finally appears.
