Chapter Fourteen

“You’re like a fly with all that buzzing.”

Bane’s put out drawl told me I wasn’t going to get any peace for a while. Adam and I returned to the cave to find a war of the wills unfolding. Knowing Bane, I wasn’t placing bets on Damien.

“The ‘buzzing’—” Damien sneered “—would stop if you answered any of my questions.”

“I highly doubt that.”

Damien didn’t share his brother’s gift of patience. Not a surprise, but I hadn’t expected him to wake Bane to satisfy his curiosity. There were times I wanted to shake Bane and ask for everything he knew, but the man had been through some real shit lately; he needed to rest.

“This could have waited,” Adam said as we sat opposite the glaring pair.

He wrapped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me close. I sunk into him, letting the evergreen scent of his magic refresh me as I fought to stay awake and resolve this showdown. Fiona was still curled up by the fire, fast asleep and wholly unconcerned with anything in the waking world. I envied her.

“He woke up,” Damien said.

Bane rolled his temples. “I was thirsty.”

A quick look at our supplies confirmed his theory. Hopefully, we’d make it back home quickly tomorrow, because we were officially tapped out. Despite his drinking binge, Bane still looked like death had warmed over. The firelight did nothing to soften the bruises that littered his body or the concave hollows of his cheeks. I closed my eyes, trying to chase away images of what Nicholas could have done to him.

“Let me rest, boy. You’ll get your answers when I’ve recovered.”

Damien bared his teeth, then turned his mouth into a frown. I had to give him credit for managing to still look attractive while pulling such an ugly face.

“At least explain Ryder’s magic. The black flames and that fairy stuff.”

Bane fixed him a hard look. “No. Goodnight.”

“It’s not yours is it?” I blurted out. “I mean, it’s fae, so….”

“I am not a fairy,” he said tiredly. A shadow crossed over his face as he stared into the distance. I was amazed he hadn’t collapsed yet. “The black flames are old magic. They’re more powerful than regular flames but require more magic to maintain. They’re meant to be used in extreme situations as they can leave the caster quite drained. Or they were years ago.”

“It’s a Fireborn ability?” Adam asked.

“Innately, but it could be learned by others. However, as I said, the spell is quite draining.”

“May as well just shift,” Damien muttered. “Guess that’s not always an option.”

I ignored the glare he shot my way. Failed as my transformation was, it’d gotten big enough that I’d smashed through the walls of the mountain city. I frowned at the memory; it had been a beautiful place. We might not have seen eye to eye on most things, but I agreed with Damien’s fascination with history.

“Is the fairy magic a new development?” Adam asked. “It was so distinct from his own magic. My theory is that he’d recently stolen it from someone, but you’d know more than I would.
