Rook lay awake in the darkness for a long time, studying Dara’s sleeping profile with his eyes. His mind was elsewhere.

He had slept for a little while. The physical release of lovemaking had pushed him over the edge of exhaustion, forcing his body and mind to shut down, but the respite had been short-lived. As soon as his brain descended into REM sleep, the dream images filled him with such anxiety that he could not help but wake up. The luminous sweep hands of his weathered Timex told him that it was nearly midnight, but if his estimation was correct, the Gulfstream had already crossed at least one time zone on its eastward voyage.

He would lose two more hours before the trip was over, not from fatigue induced sloth, but from a trick of maps and the curvature of the earth.

Time was a commodity in short supply.

He let his thoughts drift once more to the woman beside him or rather entwined with him. The manufacturers of the fold-down bed in the sleeper compartment may have promised that it could hold two persons, but it was clearly designed for single occupancy. Yet, he could not deny the things he had discovered, and if his darkest suspicions proved true then even what she offered as a promise could not be trusted. He rolled his head back, angered at what circumstances had forced him to believe.

To her credit, Dara had not betrayed him to Bane or Painter. If she had, the latter would have certainly killed him at the first opportunity.

He could forgive the indiscreet phone call that had somehow set the hired killer on his trail; her confession to Painter during the trip to the airfield had made clear that her intent was benign.

The greater mystery, the one that had wrestled him away from the gentle arms of slumber, extended beyond Dara and their mutual infatuation. While he could see the many pieces of the mystery, the connections between them remained elusive. What troubled him most was the certainty that Bane was up to something big and bad. He could not see how it pertained to Derrick Sayler’s disappearance—perhaps the two were unrelated—but Bane was in enough of a hurry to seek only the quickest, most decisive solutions. Sending in a small army of hired killers to follow up on the discovery of Sayler’s car was an example of the billionaire’s hasty thinking. Maybe
