Chapter 42

Matt woke with a pounding headache. Thankfully, Irvine had left behind one of his hangover potions when the old man had guided him back into his bed after drinking him under the table. Memories of the night before were spotty, but he was sure he’d poured out his misgivings, his worries and fears and pain, during the evening as the glasses of alcohol kept getting filled.

Drinking down the hangover potion, marveling at the fact that it tasted like citrus-and-chocolate this time, he perked right up. The headache and overall bodyache faded as did the pain behind his eyes, though he still felt the need to freshen up further.

Still. His mind was clearer, some of the darkness that had threatened to pull him under released. Not gone entirely, but enough for him to function at least. And really, that was all that he could ask for most days.

After cleaning up, he pocketed the vial that the hangover cure had come from and started for the map room. The tactical map awaited, along with further thoughts about what he could do. Or should do. Halfway out of the door, his stomach rumbled loudly enough to remind him that he hadn’t fed it, and Matt detoured long enough to pick up a meal.

A bad idea, it turned out, since that was where Irvine found him.

“Returning to the control room?” Irvine said, raising a single eyebrow even as he reached over and snatched the vial that was sticking out of Matt’s pocket.

Matt shifted a little to get away from the fast-moving grabbing hand, though he was too late. After all, he was currently carrying a heavy plate laden with food and a mug, which reduced his ability to avoid the other.

“Yeah.”

“Good. I’ll come with you.”

“No, you won’t.”

Irvine’s eyes narrowed.

Matt lifted his chin. “Don’t start. I’m fine. And you have something better to do with your time.”

“I do?”

“Finishing your potion recipe. Which one did you choose anyway?” Matt said. He couldn’t even recall which one they’d discussed, if they’d ever discussed it.

“Defense.” Irvine shrugged. “Speed did not seem necessary, considering how fast our units move. Growth is a long-term advantage, but our units already heal quicker. Unless it means experience growth, and we’d need units that last longer than a few fights. So Defense.”

“Makes sense.” Matt jerked his chin. “So get to it. Also, if you get your next Level, we might get something good.”

“I doubt it.”

“Me too. But anything is better than nothing and that’s all we got.”

“Even so…”

“I’m fine.” Matt waved his hand. “If I’m going to be the boss, I’m going to be the boss. And your marching orders are to get brewing. I got other ideas, including an ass-pull of one.”

“You have the strangest sayings,” Irvine said, but he did turn aside and head back to his rooms. “I hope it is as good an idea as the ones you’ve had before.”

“Oh, it’s better,” Matt called out after Irvine. After the other man had shut his door, Matt added, “I hope.
